he architecture
of the Tambopata Research Center is typical jungle style...a series of
platforms raised above the ground with thatched roofs and connected by
walkways.
It is constructed of native materials and it's profile blends into the
surrounding jungle. It is open to the jungle in most areas with railings
around the platforms rather than walls.
This is the dining area to the right with the chicos visiting. The chicos
are very fond of bananas and the pancakes served for breakfast. They are
not encouraged to sit at the table, so will perch on the railing hoping
for a tidbit. Guests at the center are also not encouraged to feed the
chicos. It's hard to comply with dozens of imploring macaw eyes focused
on you.
Several
seasons of chicos gather at camp. Older chicos have even brought their
wild mates in for a visit. It's fascinating that with the whole of the
jungle to chew on they have picked the roof of the center to demolish
in places. Visitors have brought toys into camp as a distraction, but
they are passed over in favor of roof chewing.

Macaws make themselves at home on the camp bulletin board. Below, chicos
visit the rocky beach across from the Colpa.
