ar above Tambopata's
lowland rainforest in the cloud forests of the Andes lie the ruins of
Machu Picchu.
This
ancient Inca city perches astride mountain sides that drop straight down
to the Urubamba River far below. The ruin was covered by jungle and almost
forgotten until its rediscovery by Hiram Bingham in 1911. It is a place
of great beauty, mystery and its function for the Incas is still not well
understood. Possible reasons for its existence are as a fortress, a religious
center, an agricultural center or all of the these purposes.
